Mondaino

Mondaino THE “PALIO DEL DAINO”
HISTORY BROUGHT TO LIFE

In the inland region, on the border between Romagna and the Marche, there lies an area rich in history, dotted with beautiful villages which maintain the atmosphere and fascination of times gone by. Overlooking one of the most amazing views in the Val Conca can be found Mondaino, once much coveted for its strategic position, and the site of alternating battles and truces for many centuries. Here, every year in August, one of Italy’s most carefully organized and evocative historical re-enactments takes place: the “Palio del Daino” (Deer Race). For four days the village is transformed, to go back in time to that feast day in 1459 when the lords of Montefeltro and Malatesta met together to sign a peace treaty. During the period of the Palio, in the shadow of the magnificent fortress, Rocca Malatestina, and all along the village streets, one can find artisans at work: tanners, makers of majolica ware, rope-makers, armourers, goldsmiths, and weavers. There are about 200 craftsmen involved, all using the traditional techniques. Alongside, there are shows by jugglers and minstrels, musicians and falconers. The entire population of the village is involved, giving us a real taste of history, and creating a magical atmosphere to capture every visitor’s imagination. The four historical “contrade” (quarters) of the village, known as Borgo(Village), Castello (Castle), Contado (Countryside) and Montebello (Fairmount) challenge each other to the Palio in the magnificent setting of the main square, the Piazza Maggiore. With its extraordinary circular design, surrounded by a neo-classical arcade, it stretches out in a wide embrace to welcome visitors to the festivities. The “Palio del Daino” is a unique opportunity to experience the atmosphere, flavour and magic of medieval life, inside the fortified walls of this delightful historic village. Did you know that... The name “Mondaino” was given to the village because of the great number of deer which once lived in the surrounding woodland (the original Latin “Mons Dainus” means “Deer mountain”). The particular semi-circular design of the square gives it excellent acoustics, making it especially suitable for musical events, like the “Sagra Musicale Mondainese” (Mondaino Music Festival), now in its 30th year.
